I reckon what he didn’t call is people being so willing. He thought the government/corporations would have to be super oppressive and stuff to get complete control, but it turns out, no. Google, Apple and Facebook have everyone’s data and people can’t get enough of the services that steal them. You don’t need telescreens and faked news reports to brainwash people, they’ll do it to themselves given enough internet access.

Include Amazon and Alibaba in that list! Way too many people buying stuff from them. Buy local first!

It wasn’t a prediction. It was a critique of the contemporary social and political climate (blind trust of and collaboration with the young surveillance state, harsh scrutiny, censorship, and persecution of dissenters, and continued growth of institutionalized xenophobic nationalism ). Orwell’s goal was not a defeatist prediction of things to come, rather a warning of what he thought might come, lest we allow it to come to fruition.

I think some use it as an instruction manual.

That and all of Ayn Rand’s pointless babble.

What’s funny / sad is that people on both sides of the political spectrum probably think this applies. One of the sides isn’t exactly known for their reading comprehension, but still...

I remember the George W Bush admin being very Orwellian about things, especially Karl Rove and Donald Rumsfeld. Now, it’s like they’re not even trying to fool us. I can’t even think of a literary parallel because anything that looked like our present reality would be seen as too hacky and obvious. Maybe a sad combination of The Lorax and The Butter Battle Book?
